Holding to Account....
Healthwatch Walsall’s ‘Holding to Account’ follows on after our successful ‘Spotlight On’ briefings at our public meetings. This is where we ask the public attending those meeting to tell us what are their biggest concerns regarding health and social care services/providers. We then approach the service/provider and ask questions of them regarding the public's concerns.
The issue of Walsall CCG seemingly making the biggest cuts to Mental Health Services in the country came up. People raised their concerns and Healthwatch acted on them.
We asked questions at the May Walsall CCG Governing Body meeting. We asked ‘Can you give assurance for Walsall patients that the quality, access and outcomes will be protected? And secondly, has any public engagement taken place prior to the decision taking place?’
Professor Simon Brake, Chief Officer, Walsall CCG sent a very detailed response to Healthwatch in which he explained the facts behind the headline and how the CCG had engaged with people in order inform their planning.
‘Holding to Account’ works as we see from this example where we held the CCG to account and they provided a full response.
